There was an interesting story on Marketplace from NPR about illegal immigrants and Dunkin' Donuts. They interviewed a doctor who estimates that a quarter of his practice consists of undocumented people, many of whom are working under the table. The majority came to the U.S. legally with tourist visas, and became illegal once they overstayed those visas. Popular belief notwithstanding, not all illegal aliens come through Mexico.
